People often deceive themselves by becoming show-offs under the pretense of making casual conversation. There are people who cannot sit with others without saying: “I did this and I did that… I spent so much in charity…”.

Saudaraku tercinta! Sesungguhnya alam semesta ini, yang besar mahupun yang kecil, semuanya menghadap kepada Allah s.w.t., bertasbih kepada-Nya, mengagungkan dan bersujud kepada-Nya. Allah s.w.t. berfirman yang maksudnya, “Dan tidak ada satu pun melainkan bertasbih dengan memuji-Nya”. (Surah Al-Isra’, Ayat 44).

Syukur merupakan suatu amalan yang utama dan mulia, oleh kerana itu Allah s.w.t. memerintahkan kita semua untuk bersyukur kepada-Nya, mengakui segala keutamaan yang telah Dia berikan, sebagaimana dalam firman-Nya, yang maksudnya,

“Oleh itu ingatlah kamu kepada-Ku (dengan mematuhi hukum dan undang-undang-Ku), supaya Aku membalas kamu dengan kebaikan dan bersyukurlah kamu kepada-Ku dan janganlah kamu kufur (akan nikmat-Ku)”. (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 152).

Sifat angkuh dan sombong telah banyak membinasakan makhluk Allah s.w.t., bermula dari peristiwa pengusiran Iblis dari syurga kerana, lantaran kesombongannya, enggan sujud kepada Nabi Adam a.s. tatkala diperintahkan oleh Allah s.w.t. untuk sujud hormat kepadanya.

Strictly speaking, envy (hasad) is hatred and disliking the good condition of the envied one. This is of two types:

1. The blameworthy type of envy is unrestricted dislike of the blessings bestowed upon the envied. This is the type of jealousy that incurs blame, so when one hates something he is then hurt and grieved by the existence of what he hates, and this becomes a sickness in his heart such that he takes pleasure in the removal of the blessings from the envied even if this does not result in any benefit to him except the single benefit of having the pain that was in his soul removed.
